Knowledge-based Diagnosis - An Important Challenge and
Touchstone for AI

The paper discusses automated diagnostic reasoning about
technical systems, focusing on two main issues:
- Any serious, general solution has to address fundamental
AI problems, in particular the formalization of non-monotonic reasoning
and reasoning about physical systems.
- The nature of the task constrains these problems such
that solutions become possible. On the other hand, some of these constraints
do not only confine the applicability of the solution to other tasks, but
appear to bee too restrictive even for some diagnostic problems, thus providing
challenges for future research.
The necessity of a sound theoretical foundation in conjunction
with applicability to real problems suggests the field as an important
environment for assessing the actual utility of existing methods and for
stimulating research in various areas of AI.
